Overview
In many ways, with food from all over the world now so readily available throughout the year, the notion of harvest occurring just once – in late September or early October – may feel a little misleading, or even unnecessary. And yet, in the UK, it is still the time when many crops are gathered from the fields, berries collected from the bushes, and food is at its most plentiful before the leaner times of late autumn and winter.
More than that, harvest is a time steeped in history and tradition, in celebration and song. The Harvest Festival remains a key fixture in the calendar of schools and churches, providing an opportunity to say thank you for the food that we have and to learn about where it comes from.
The thirteen songs within the book, in their varied nature and styles, capture a flavour of harvest in the 21st Century and, we hope, will be enjoyed by children for many, many years to come.
The short service at the end of the book is yours to use or adapt as you decide, full of evocative readings, poems and reflections.
